Lunchtime Lecture: Camillus Aqueduct Restoration

August 25, 2022 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Learn more about the restoration of the historic Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct, the only restored towpath era aqueduct on the Erie Canal. Explore this engineering marvel and the tremendous effort involved in its rehabilitation!
Presenting is David Beebe, President of the Camillus Canal Society and Director of the Camillus Erie Canal Park.
After graduating from St. Lawrence University and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, Dave served in the army in Germany. As president of the local Audubon Society, he was dedicated to saving wildlife areas. In discovering the continual dumping into the old canal bed in Camillus, he approached the town to curtail the operation. The Town of Camillus Erie Canal Park was created in 1972. Under Dave’s direction a small army of volunteers turned an abandoned overgrown portion of the historic enlarged Erie Canal into a viable 400 acre 7 mile linear canal park. To date, perhaps, his greatest accomplishment was overseeing the reconstruction of the 1842 the Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the New York State Canal Society for many years and helped in the planning
of the Port Byron Project. He is the author of “Camillus Halfway There”, a treatise on structures on the Erie Canal and their functions. Among the many awards and honors he has received, perhaps the most treasured, is Spirit of the Canal Award presented to
the Beebes at the Rochester World Canal Conference in 2000. The Beebes have also received an Outstanding Alumni Citation from St. Lawrence University and have been inducted in the West Genesee and Town of Camillus Hall of Fame.
This talk will be presented both in-person and via Zoom. Attendance is FREE with a recommended $10 donation. You can register here:
