Lunchtime Lecture – EDUCATION for LIBERATION along the Erie Canal

February 22, 2024 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Dr. Milton C. Sernett, Professor Emeritus of African American Studies and History, Syracuse University, will give an illustrated talk about Beriah Green and Oneida Institute. The school was situated along the Erie Canal east of the Village of Whitesboro, Oneida County. Green, a radical reformer, transformed the school into a training ground for abolitionists. More African Americans enrolled in Oneida Institute than any other “college” of the pre-Civil War period.

Sernett’s books include Abolition’s Axe: Beriah Green, Oneida Institute, and the Black Freedom Struggle and North Star Country: Upstate New York and The Crusade for African American Freedom as well a books on Harriet Tubman and other topics. He is a founding member of the Abolition Hall of Fame, located in Peterboro, Madison County.

This talk will be presented both in-person and via Zoom. Attendance is FREE with a recommended $10 donation. We also have a special offer: anyone who registers to attend the talk in-person and makes a donation of $5 or more, will receive a free copy of Sernett’s biography of Green “Abolition’s Axe: Beriah Green, Oneida Institute, and the Black Freedom Struggle” at the talk.
