Pathway of Resistance: A Walking Tour

Special walking tour examines African-American experiences in Erie Canal corridor

Join the Erie Canal Museum for Pathway of Resistance, a guided walking tour in observance of Underground Railroad Month. This free guided tour of Syracuse examines the African-American experience on and along the banks of the Erie Canal, from its beginnings to the present day. We are presenting this in-person program on September 18 and 19 at 1 p.m. Space is limited to protect everyone’s safety, so please register in advance at this web page.

While this story is rarely pleasant, the issues of slavery, racism and resistance are critical to understanding our society today, and how we can improve. Because we believe that the issues this tour presents are very important, we are offering the program free of charge. We do, however, encourage a donation of $10 per person.

The Pathway of Resistance tour begins at the corner of Montgomery Street and Erie Boulevard in downtown Syracuse. This is just outside the Museum garden. All guests are required to wear face coverings for the duration of the program. A number of free parking spots are available in the lot across from the Museum, under routes 81 and 690.
