Geological Obstacles of the Erie Canal

April 30, 2020 @ 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Free

Thomas X. Grasso discusses the geological challenges faced by the original Canal’s engineers  during this Facebook Live discussion.

Join the Erie Canal Museum on Facebook Live at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 30 for our weekly Quarantine Coffee Hour. The program is free and open to the public.

Thomas X. Grasso, past president of the Canal Society of New York State, will discuss the geological obstacles that the Erie Canal and its engineers had to overcome going from east to west. Do your own research on the topic by reading The Erie Canal’s Unique Geological History, written by Museum Educator Derrick Pratt especially for this program. The article includes a link to a list of related terms and an outline of the presentation.

The men who designed the Erie Canal found some of Upstate New York’s topography very conducive to their goals. They also encountered geological features that made the waterway’s completion very difficult. Learn more about these unique features and how they affected the original Erie Canal by reading Derrick Pratt’s article and participating in the coffee hour.

We encourage you to share questions beforehand by commenting on the Quarantine Coffee Hour Facebook event, or by emailing derrick@eriecanalmuseum.org. Your questions will help make the program even more informative. And please be sure to ask questions during the discussion!

We look forward to seeing you for Quarantine Coffee Hour on Facebook Live, at 10 a.m. April 30!

In response to the COVID-19 crisis and to protect visitors, volunteers, and staff, the Museum is closed to the public until further notice. This online event is a great way to learn Canal history as we all do our part to stay safe and healthy. Until we open our doors, we are working diligently to serve you through these types of programs. We greatly appreciate your support as we face financial uncertainty. If you’d like to make a donation to the Museum, please click here.

The Erie Canal Museum is partially supported by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
