Session 1: Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement by Sally McMillen

The Erie Canal Museum and Humanities New York present “Women on the Water: Votes for Women!”, an exploration of an international movement for social change with strong roots in New York State. By looking at this theme with an eye toward our home state and the Erie Canal, we hope to reflect on the progress and limits of reform movements in New York. This program will address some of the historic inequalities faced by women of color and the legacies of these inequalities today. “Votes for Women!” is intended to bring women to the forefront of our historical conversations and delve deeper into the complexities of the struggle for women’s rights in the United States, New York, and on the Erie Canal.
Join us for this free program, discussing Seneca Falls and the Origins of the Women’s Rights Movement. In this text, historian Sally McMillen examines the significance of the early decades of the women’s suffrage movement, demonstrating just how important the years leading to and following the Seneca Falls convention of 1848 were to women’s rights in the United States.
If you participate in this program we will lend you one book a month, courtesy of Humanities New York. We have a limited number of copies of each text available on a first-come, first-served basis. One Saturday a month at 10:30am the group will meet to discuss the reading, with the conversation facilitated by a trained moderator. Participation in this program is free and open to the public. Additionally, there will be free refreshments at the monthly meetings.
