Women on the Water: Votes for Women Reading and Discussion Group

Session 3: African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote, 1850–1920
by Rosalyn Terborg-Penn

April 27, 2024 | 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM

The Erie Canal Museum and Humanities New York present “Women on the Water: Votes for Women!”, an exploration of an international movement for social change with strong roots in New York State. By looking at this theme with an eye toward our home state and the Erie Canal, we hope to reflect on the progress and limits of reform movements in New York. This program will address some of the historic inequalities faced by women of color and the legacies of these inequalities today. “Votes for Women!” is intended to bring women to the forefront of our historical conversations and delve deeper into the complexities of the struggle for women’s rights in the United States, New York, and on the Erie Canal.

Join us for this free program, discussing African American Women in the Struggle for the Vote, 1850–1920. This book adds an important dimension to our understanding of the suffrage movement by focusing on the oft-overlooked efforts of African-American women to secure voting rights.

We have a limited number of copies of each text, courtesy of Humanities New York, available on a first-come, first-served basis. One Saturday a month at 10:30am the group will meet to discuss the reading, with the conversation facilitated by a trained moderator. Participation in this program is free and open to the public. Additionally, there will be free refreshments at the monthly meetings. To register for the program and get information on how to receive books, contact or call 315-471-0593 and ask for Elizabeth.

This event is funded in part by Humanities New York with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
