From the Syracuse Poster Project, founded in 2001, to bring together community poets and artists to create an annual series of illustrated poetry posters. Its purpose is to help Syracuse make better use of its downtown poster panels. In an effort to become sustainable, the Project has since evolved into non-profit enterprise that generates value through public poster art.

The process begins with a call for poetry. Over the summer, the project solicits the three-line form of poetry known as haiku . Poets submit work about downtown, the city at large or the nearby countryside. Each year, approximately 100 poets participate, each submitting up to three haiku.

They then implement an open call for Central New York artists. Each year approximately 40 artists commit to participating. After screening haiku, they allot four favorites to each artist. Artists then select and illustrate their preferred haiku.

Poster prints are 11×17-inches, printed on heavy weight (90-pound) Mohawk cover paper. An information page with photos of the artist and poet, and hand-written comments from each are included.
